Apologies From The Black Keys

The Black Keys are sorry to announce the cancellation of the New Zealand and Australian tour including all appearances at the Big Day Out touring festival as well as a portion of the European tour in March. An arduous year of touring and promotion has drained the band and necessitated time off. Dan and Patrick wish to thank all of you who have shown such incredible support since the release of Brothers and have helped make the album a success.

This is disappointing. I'd be pretty bummed if a show I was going to got cancelled, no doubt about it. But whose to say cancelling is unreasonable? Certainly not any of you idiots commenting on here. So shut up.

Rest up Keys. You are, in fact, human.

Goli's picture

Aw keys, Dan and Pat hope yall come back ready and rested
and for all of you who are "disappointed in the keys" and "arent moved by their music anymore" ???? WOW . . . is all i have to say

And George Orwell was right,
to all those brown-nosers, they won't call you, write back to you, get you a record deal, get you as a supporting act. They are not interested get that in your head. They play the big venues in the US, maybey the're pissed off playing the small ones in Europe. Lame-O with a capital L

Abgesagt's picture

You know what bugs me the most, bought three tickets on the regular market, talked two other ones of my friends (second hand ticket market) to join in, we're ready for a 500 mile journey (yeah. my hometown was sold out, but they are good so what the heck). After they cancelled the shows I fellt nothing, I don't hate them their music doesn't move me anymore (never felt that before).
So kudos to BRMC for being a band to overcome all that, and yeah strange feeling here, the've cancelled the gigs to me there nothing more than pseudo Indie lame-os

I will never forget my first Black Keys gig at the gov, in Adelaide. Or the second, or the third. I have seen The Black Keys play four times now and every single time was amazing. They are one of my favourite bands in the world right now.
I am upset that they have cancelled their Australian leg of the tour. I have disrupted plans and lost money because of it, but mostly I'm disappointed that I won't get to see them play the songs from the new album (which I love) live.
BUT. I do not hate the band. I do not think they're soft. I wish nothing but health and success for them so that they may continue to make amazing music and return to Australia as soon as they can to share it with us.
If anyone here is stupid enough to boycott their future shows, because they cancelled just this one, then I feel very very sorry for those people.

btw being crazy never felt so good

btw, I'd love to do this until I get thrown out of the website.
Your super, paramount comment proves George Orwell was right

I feel sorry for you, you haven't got laid for a long time.

bro's! you's gotta put new zealand on your next tour list, after hearing the you guys were in the bdo line-up i got a ticket for the first time in 5 years, bummer, i saw you's at the powerstation a couple of years back and what can i say, "mean maori mean". please come back to auckland nz, you owe me, nah, but seriously man, please.

kimmy4113's picture

oh yeah those who defend the band definitely have our heads in their asses.
makes perfect sense cause you know, we actually care about the well being of the band, compared to you dicks who are just SO disappointed that they canceled the tour. cause you'd rather see a show that they didn't perform their best. or maybe the stress of the tour causes the band to break up, but hell, as long as you guys get to see them, thats all that matters right?

grow up and pull your head out of your own ass.

All you supposed fans sound like you really care for these guys and their well being, or that you have any idea what "work ethic" is. These two gentlemen have dedicated their lives to this band. This is not a job. Its a lifestyle. God forbid they take a little bit for themselves to preserve their mental stability, relationships, and personal business, and ruin your "week...possibly month." So fuck off.

Keep your heads up, Keys.

Take time to be with your family, you had a taxing schedule and you are both probably dead tired. Have a great break! Keep up the good work!

I first heard of you guys about a month ago. That was all it took for me to fall in love with your music. Before you guys all I had was Jack White and whatever projects he was doing. You guys are basically the last hope for real music. I know there are other who feel the same way. Even people who aren't into indie music are starting to take notice of you guys. But let me ask you one thing; Do you guys think you're setting a good example, quitting when the going gets rough? People have to do a lot of things even if they're "tired". You guys have 2 Grammy nominations. Now if I were in a band that had 2 Grammy nominations the last thing I would do was quit. I mean how long have you guys been on the road? You guys are going to have to get used to it as many bands before you have. I certainly hope you guys are reconsidering cancelling out your shows. I don't even have tickets to it but this just makes me kind of sceptical; if I ever get tickets to your show how will I know you'll show up? People spent a lot of money. They worked their butts off to see your show now the least you can do is get up there grab your drumsticks and guitar and give them what they paid for!

You guys probubly won't read this seeing as you're "tired" but I feel I speak for a lot of people. I love you 2 but this really says something about your work ethic.

you both have disappointed a large amount of fans and a great number of people who were looking forward to hearing and seeing you for the first time.your days of redemption are numbered until you announce a new tour of oz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry to hear you guys won't be coming to Sydney's Big Day Out. I'm a Canadian traveling in Australia and I bought tickets last October and made sure I was in Sydney specifically to see you guys! But I guess if you're tired, you're tired, and there's nothing we can do about that. I am disappointed though, but there is still lots of awesome bands playing at Big Day Out. I'll just have to catch you the next time you're in Canada. Enjoy your break!

Abgesagt's picture

What a lame move and ignore the comments that are just brown-nosing. You don't plan tours one day before they start. If you do a touring marathon don't book further gigs.
Either fire your tour manager or take a look in your calender to see how many gigs you have to do.
btw people are mean can't really be fans. You can only hate what you love !!!
So thanks for nothing.

bigburdan's picture

damn too bad you guys arent doin shows in amsterdam/paris before the feb. 8th ill be out there.. you should deffinately come through philly on your next tour

Dan and Pat, enjoy your break guys. You definitely deserve it!

casablancas's picture

you can play in amsterdam, but in germany you cancel all the gigs
that must be a Joke, not fair.
you have to understand that some fans who wait for years to see you live (not on you tube , you su!*er)
are really pissed off,so would you be.
So think about it, you ROCKSTARS

marcigeller's picture

We watched you on SNL-never heard of you before but actually listened to both numbers which is rare these days...lots of really bad crap going on that show. You guys were great and as a fellow musician who tours like crazy and never takes a break, I applaud you for taking the time to care for yourselves. I actually started off the new year quitting my band and committing to recording my next CD and taking some time off the road. ;-)
Cheers,

Hope you guys have a well deserved break and ignore these comments from people without perspective. I look forward to enjoying your music live when you can get back to Australia (we're not all lacking understanding) and in the meantime my 4 year old and I will continue to rock out to your tunes - we especially love Brothers! (Howlin' for you and Tighten up). Thanks.

cainie2444's picture

I just dont get why you didnt plan ahead and set times off for breaks in the tour. Rather than Setting tour dates and pulling out at late notice.

Still Shattered.

Thank you guys.....i was very excited for your show in Cologne, then with nothing bad in mind I visit your page and you cancel all the german shows??? (on my birtday by the way...) Again all the german shows????

Unbelievable uncool guys! Im very very disappointed!

Thank you for the Birthday gift....

That sucks and I'm very disappointed... It's pretty unprofessional. Don't book concerts if you're tired ! You should think about that before taking decision to play.
Oh you're playing at Coachella on Friday April 15th. Not tired anymore? Haha, business as usual...
Anyway, hope to see you soon in Europe.

stoket01's picture

Hey Black Keys.

Over the years you have been really good to Australia and I for one really appreciate the traveling you have done to places like Perth, WA. I hope you get the break you deserve, and I'm sure that because you also feel the love that Australia has for you over the past 10 (or so) years, you will (hopefully) be back for some awesome 90 min club gigs.

Thumbs up Guys.

Supportive Fan from Perth WA Australia

zé's picture

come on, seriously you guys!!! canceling concerts because you're tired??!! don't book them then!!! you got to understand that you are affecting peoples lives with that kind of irresponsable management, making us loose our money, time, and most of all, our love for you guys. For normal people, this is how it works: I work and study at the same time, don't have free weekends, and sleep 5 hours a day, I'M ALSO TIRED, BUT I STILL DO MY FUC*ING JOB!!!!!!!!!!
ps: esta é para ti minha Pretinha! hahaha tem um bom dia!adoro-te***=)

I can understand that you would need rest since you totally rock out and give everything you got. You definately did in West Des Moines this August even when the air conditioner broke. With the success of Brothers you have been promoting your album more. I hope you take home some Grammys! You deserve them. I really want to see you before your tour is up.

Buttabuns's picture

Pretty bummed your shows were cancelled, it was gonna be an awesome gift to my bf for his 21st to see you guys. Totally understand needing some down time, but you guys shoulda thought about that before taking on so much work. Its pretty unprofess, seems a lot of fans are quite pissed.
Anyways hope you manage to get back to nz soon

athena31679's picture

So sad to hear that:( Hope you guys get the rest you need so that you can tour in Indianapolis, IN at some point:)

That is the second time I bought tickets and booked flight+hotel and lost my money...and again on German Tour.
I guess, the third time I'd be kinda stupid to buy the ticket

Either something is up that they are not telling us, in which case I hope all is well and that they can work it out and come back stronger than ever, or they truly are exhausted. In which case I have to say from watching them over the past 6 years or so, it's time to get some decent management in place. Ya, maybe its a sell out move, but it just seems like these two guys are taking too much upon their own shoulders. I can think of one band that has toured non-stop for the past 10 years in a row without a break (this year being their first year off since 2000), averaging 200 shows per year over that time and prior to 2000 had done it for 8 straight years at the same pace, and they all managed to stay sane and even manage to have family life as well. But it took the most incredible management team and organizational strength that the music business has ever seen. I wouldn't want to see TBK become that kind of machine but there has to be some seriously sound management decisions being made by people other than Dan and Pat if you're going to try to maintain that type of pace.

lawnboysoam's picture

did any of you see the colbert report the other night with the keys and that guy from vampire weekend? dan looked AWFUL. there's more to this then they are telling us so ease up on the "they got their money so they're taking some time off" comments. my bet is Dan=rehab

Can someone from BK please confirm that the AMS show will NOT be canceled? Seems strange that the last leg of the tour is marked canceled with the exceptions of Vegas, Paris and Amsterdam which are smack in the middle are not. Already going to have to fight with the airlines to get my tickets refunded without significant penalties and was just about to book lodging. PLEASE, please, please update for those fans who were traveling from abroad ASAP. I respect your decision (you guys looked beat in Seattle at the Deck the Hall Ball but sounded great) but please ensure that all of your updates are current. Hope to hear that AMS will be kept as is.

fan's picture

You posted some apologies but I can't seem to find anything about what you are going to do to make up for it...

I bought tickets for your Cologne show and booked a two day stay in a Cologne hotel especially for your concert. Because I don't live in Germany had to pay a lot of shipping costs to get the tickets send to my home. Now I have to pay those shipping costs again to send the tickets back in order to get a refund on the tickets, shipping costs non refundable!!! Also the stay in the hotel non refundable!!! A lot of money wasted, had to save up for quite some time to pay for all this, I don't earn a rockstar salary... Thank you Black Keys...

I respect the fact touring can be stressfull, but why book so many shows? (Or did you already earn enough money on the tour so that you can cancel the rest of the shows?) Thought only big pompous rockstars like Axl Rose cancelled shows and leave their fans standing in the cold (fans that pay your bills) but aparently not.... A very disappointed fan...
